When we ask principals and business managers why they came back to J&D for a second project or made a referral to another school, the same handful of reasons come up.
They’ve seen us work on education sites before. Schools are not standard commercial environments. Early site inspections, reviews of existing services and capacities, hazardous materials assessments, and confirmation of the compliance pathway are all done up front. Most of what catches school projects out (asbestos, inadequate services, infrastructure that no longer meets current standards) is identifiable before the first day of demolition if someone takes the time to look.
Compliance is built into how we run the job. Department of Education requirements, Australian Standards, Queensland Health, and child-safe site expectations are non-negotiable on a school site. We work with licensed specialists, keep documentation in order, and raise issues with stakeholders openly when they come up.
When something changes, the project doesn’t lose control. Scope adjustments and unforeseen site conditions happen, even on well-planned jobs. What separates a controlled project from a chaotic one is how variations are handled. We assess changes promptly, communicate the impact on programme and budget clearly, involve the right stakeholders in the decision, and protect the term-start deadline wherever possible.
Communication is consistent the whole way through. Principals, business managers, P&C members and the Department all need different information at different points in the project. We make sure everyone who needs to know, knows.
We build for the next ten years, not just opening day. Materials are specified for high-use education environments. Service layouts are designed to support future upgrades. Accessibility and inclusion are part of the brief from the start. The finished space holds up to the wear it’s going to get and supports the way teaching and learning evolve in it.
We also know how to work alongside a school that’s still running. Even during holiday windows, groundskeepers, admin staff, deliveries and other contractors are on site. For projects that run partly during term, we stage the works so teaching and day-to-day operations can continue uninterrupted. The Block C refurbishment at Ipswich Central State School is one example of this. The classrooms were stripped and refit while the rest of the school stayed operational.

Canteen and tuckshop refurbishments
Canteen and tuckshop work is one of our most frequently requested school scopes. The works almost always need to fit inside a school holiday window, and the food service area has to meet Queensland Health standards before it can reopen.
Taigum State School
The existing canteen at Taigum State School hadn’t been updated since the 1970s, with asbestos throughout the building and an undersized electrical supply. J&D was awarded the project in late October 2024 with a deadline of Term 1, 2025.
The scope covered asbestos removal, a sub-main upgrade with 100 metres of underground cabling, a grease trap installation picked up during early design review, and a full internal fit-out. Site access was restricted to pre-drop-off and school hours, and several design and asbestos-related variations were worked through with Honeywill Consulting along the way. The canteen was in use by Week 2 of Term 1.
Administration Blocks
Wavell State High School, Block A Administration Refurbishment
J&D reconfigured the ground floor administration block at Wavell State High School into a new reception, student services area, meeting rooms, offices, sick bay and staff kitchen.
During demolition, asbestos was identified in the existing vinyl flooring. The works were classified as out of scope and licensed contractors handled removal before construction continued. The build was staged so the administration team could return at the start of the new school year, with remaining works completed around them.
Ipswich Central State School Administration Building Refurbishment
J&D delivered a full internal refurbishment of the administration building at Ipswich Central State School, reconfiguring the layout and integrating upgraded electrical, hydraulic and fire services into the existing structure.
As demolition progressed, previously concealed structural elements and service constraints were uncovered. Practical design adjustments were made on site to keep trades moving and the programme intact.
Covered Walkways and outdoor structures
Covered walkways and outdoor learning areas are a common upgrade request, particularly at schools managing sun safety and wet weather access between buildings. J&D’s education build experience across these structure types means the design and construction process is well understood from the outset.
Ipswich West State Special School, Covered Walkway
J&D supplied and installed a new structural steel covered walkway providing sheltered access for students moving between key areas of the campus, including footings, structure, roofing, electrical works and anti-climb rollers.
During delivery, significant underground services were identified in the proposed footing locations, including stormwater, sewer and water infrastructure. The post layout was modified in consultation with the engineer and Honeywill Consulting, and all footing holes were excavated using a vacuum truck to avoid service strikes. The walkway was delivered with no strikes and no disruption to daily school operations.
Classroom and learning space upgrades
Classroom upgrades carried out during school holidays require precise coordination to ensure spaces are clean, functional, and fully equipped when teachers and students arrive on day one of term.
J&D has completed classroom and learning space works across multiple Queensland school campuses, managing trades, finishes, and handover timelines to meet the strict term-start requirement.

Ipswich Central State School, Block C Refurbishment
J&D refurbished the first-floor classrooms in Block C at Ipswich Central State School. The scope covered a full strip-out and fit-out, new linings, windows, doors, fire safety equipment, electrical and mechanical upgrades to DOE specifications, new joinery and teaching walls, subfloor levelling, new flooring, and repainting throughout. Hearing augmentation systems were installed to improve audio accessibility for students with hearing loss.
A major mid-project variation required removal of asbestos-containing sheeting from the building’s external perimeter, involving full scaffolding, licensed removal, and re-sheeting and repainting, all coordinated inside the holiday window. The refurbishment was delivered ahead of schedule.
How we handle issues on a school site
Asbestos in the vinyl flooring. A 1970s electrical sub-main that can’t carry a new commercial kitchen. Stormwater and sewer mains sitting exactly where the new footings need to go. A structural element behind the wall that wasn’t on the drawings. What matters is how the contractor responds when they appear. Three things happen on a J&D job when something is uncovered mid-project.
The variation is flagged immediately, in writing, with a clear cost and time impact so the school’s approval process can move on it without delay. The licensed trades required (asbestos removal, electrical, hydraulic) are brought in through our established subcontractor network rather than sourced reactively. And the programme is replanned around the variation, so the holiday-window deadline still holds, even if it means reshuffling sequence or extending hours.

Can J&D complete a canteen refurbishment within a single set of school holidays?
In most cases, yes. The majority of J&D’s canteen and tuckshop projects are completed within a standard Queensland school holiday break of two to three weeks. Larger or more complex scopes may require a longer break or staged delivery across two holiday periods. J&D will give you an honest assessment of the timeline during the initial scoping conversation so you can plan accordingly.
Does J&D hold the necessary licences for school construction work in Queensland?
Yes. J&D holds a current QBCC licence and carries appropriate insurances for commercial construction and fitout work in Queensland, including on school sites.
How early should a school contact J&D before a planned refurbishment?
As early as possible. Schools that contact J&D at least one to two terms ahead of their target holiday window have the most scheduling flexibility and the best chance of confirming their preferred dates. For larger projects or those requiring council or departmental approvals, earlier engagement gives more time to manage the approval process without compressing the construction window
