THE BRIEF
When J&D Contracting were engaged to refurbish and reconfigure the administration building at Ipswich Central State School, the team knew the project would demand more than standard construction practice. Working within an ageing structure with unknown conditions behind the walls, J&D delivered a fully upgraded facility that meets Department of Education requirements and sets the building up for decades of continued use.
OUR APPROACH
The scope covered a full internal refurbishment of the administration building, reconfiguring spaces to suit a new layout while integrating upgraded electrical, hydraulic and fire services into the existing structure. Ceiling and floor levels were modified throughout to accommodate the revised design.
As works progressed, previously concealed structural elements and service constraints came to light, requiring practical design adjustments to be made quickly. Rather than letting these discoveries stall the project, J&D worked closely with the project team to find solutions quickly, keeping trades moving and the programme intact.
During the project, J&D Contracting:
- Reconfigured internal spaces within the existing administration building to suit the new layout and functional requirements
- Integrated upgraded electrical, hydraulic and fire services into the existing building structure
- Modified ceilings and floor levels to accommodate the revised layout and service requirements
- Made practical design adjustments on site in response to previously concealed structural elements and existing service constraints
- Maintained close coordination between trades and consistent communication with stakeholders to keep the programme on track throughout construction
Project Outcomes
The finished building is a vast improvement on what was there before. Staff now work in a reconfigured, fully compliant administration space with modern services, revised floor and ceiling levels, and building systems that meet current Department of Education standards.
What made this project notable was how we handled what we did anticipate coming during the refurbishment. Concealed structural conditions that would have derailed a less experienced contractor were absorbed and resolved without compromising the timeline, safety record or quality of the finished work.
