Ipswich West State Special School Covered Walkway

October 1, 2025

THE BRIEF

The Ipswich West State School project involved the construction of a new structural steel covered walkway to provide sheltered access for students moving between key areas of the school.

J&D Contracting was engaged to supply and install the new walkway structure, including concrete footings, posts, beams, roofing, electrical works, and the installation of anti-climb rollers for added security.  The project scope encompassed site preparation, including demolition of existing garden beds and concrete, plus coordination with specialist subcontractors.

The challenge arose when significant underground services, including stormwater, sewer, and water infrastructure, were identified in the proposed footing locations. These conditions required mid-project design adjustments to ensure the structure could be safely built without damaging existing services.

OUR APPROACH

During the delivery phase, several latent conditions impacted the original design. Significant underground services were identified in the proposed footing locations, including stormwater, sewer, and water infrastructure. One post location also conflicted with existing plumbing, which required rerouting of pipework prior to proceeding with footings.

As a result, the original post layout had to be modified in consultation with the engineer and Honeywill Consulting to ensure the structure could be safely constructed without compromising existing services.

To mitigate the risk of service strikes, all holes were excavated using a vacuum truck rather than conventional mechanical methods. This added complexity and time to the footing process but ensured compliance with WHS obligations and protected school infrastructure.

Despite unexpected underground service issues and the need for a mid-project design adjustment, the Ipswich West State School Covered Walkway was delivered efficiently and safely. The proactive identification and resolution of service conflicts, collaboration between J&D Contracting, Honeywill Consulting, the design engineer, and onsite school representatives played a key role in navigating these challenges and ensuring a successful project outcome.

During the project, J&D Contracting:
