THE BRIEF
The existing canteen at Taigum State School hadn’t been updated since the 1970s and no longer met the needs of a modern school environment. With outdated infrastructure, limited space, asbestos present throughout the building, and an inadequate electrical supply, a complete refurbishment was required.
The project was awarded to J&D Contracting in late October 2024, with a tight deadline to have the new canteen ready for use by the start of Term 1, 2025. Along the way, several design changes and asbestos-related variations were requested, requiring fast, flexible project management.
OUR APPROACH
From design revisions to service upgrades and full fit-out, the project demanded careful coordination, early issue identification, and flexibility to manage significant scope changes.
During the project, J&D Contracting:
- Coordinated asbestos testing and removal to ensure a safe, compliant environment
- Managed demolition, disconnection, and relocation of key services including plumbing and electrical
- Engaged consultants to facilitate building approvals, hydraulic design, and structural engineering sign-off
- Identified early design issues and coordinated grease trap installation as a variation before works commenced
- Upgraded the electrical sub-main with 100m of underground cabling to the main switchboard
- Carried out extensive internal construction including new framing, linings, flooring, cabinetry, and commercial-grade stainless steel benches
- Supplied and installed appliances, air conditioning, security screens, and a motorised security shutter
- Delivered full finishes including painting, builders clean, and external turf reinstatement
- Managed deliveries and site access within tight school scheduling restrictions (pre-drop off and school hours only)
- Reached practical completion by 31 January 2025, ready for use by Week 2 of Term 1
